If the island WAS real, Then the writers chose to answer one season's mystery (the flash sideways), while Leaving Nearly all prior mysteries (the ones people Invested Them in to get to season 6) unanswered. People can not express frustration or draw a conclusion That tries to account for that without having their intelligence questioned?

If the island was real, then how is anything accounted for? Babies conceived on the island can't be born? Giant black smoke monsters? Healing of the sick? Lost whispering souls stuck in limbo? Two-thousand year old men and an ageless Richard? All on \n the afterlife. Almost everything that came before Season 6 has been just brushed aside in favor of a mystery concocted in the show's final act.

That's IF the island was \t go "once and for all.

Where That does leave us? Either the post-crash Entire series WAS Some type of limbo characters WHERE Had to find redemption and finally let go OR They Survived the plane crash and Lived on the MOST magical island in the universe WHERE nothing is Explained And Then, DURING the final season, we get Introduced to the afterlife.

There's merit to Both Sides, But only the dead-all-along idea Makes for Consistent writing and a Fully Formed story.
